Euro steady ahead of US jobs report

BERLIN (AP) — The euro is barely changed against the dollar as markets focus on the upcoming release of a closely watched U.S. jobs report.

The euro bought $1.2815 in Friday morning European trading, close to its level of $1.2812 in New York late Thursday. The British pound edged up to $1.5411 from $1.5389 and the dollar was unchanged at 84.23 Japanese yen.

The dollar was trading within a tight range ahead of the Labor Department’s release later Friday of August employment figures. The dollar has slid this summer as a string of reports on the U.S. economy showed growth slowing.

The euro showed little movement Thursday after the European Central Bank, as expected, left interest rates untouched and kept in place efforts to supply banks with credit.
